he Avon Maitland District School Board is pleased to announce that Stratford Central Secondary School has once again been selected as a provincial launch site of Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs, this time in Information and Communication Technology.

The digitalCentral program at Stratford Central Secondary School was chosen as a launch site, under the Information and Communications sector, based on evidence of an established program, strong community and post secondary education partnerships, the delivery of sector-recognized certifications, and a cooperative education component.

The digitalCentral program promotes the creation and production of communications systems and software and digital media. The program is complemented by the artsCentral program that was recognised two years ago as a provider of the Arts and Culture SHSM program at Stratford Central.

Specialized High Skills Majors offer students greater choice for customized, career-focused secondary school learning in a specific sector of the economy that meets their particular interests and talents. Focused learning experiences help students explore, identify and refine career goals and make informed decisions related to post secondary goals. Students are able to recognize the connection between secondary school learning and future employment by establishing relationships and networks in their chosen career field. Students gain confidence in their ability to be successful, improve their skills and work habits, in addition to earning sector-recognized certifications.

The foundation of the Specialist High Skills Major program is built upon ‘reach-ahead’ activities, which include the Communication Technology students participating in workshops given by University of Waterloo staff, student for a day at Sheridan, Conestoga and Fanshawe College; students participating in the docFest Stratford Festival. Current partners include, University of Waterloo, Sheridan College, Rogers Television, Max the Mutt School of Animation, Long and McQuade, Creative Feats, Conceptual Pathways and Corporate Solutions.
